Why do people do stuff for free? Let me tell you how I got to this point to create a Women in Security Mentors (WINSMentors.com) association. If you didn’t know, mentoring and help others has been around for centuries. The origins of mentoring can be traced back to ancient Greek mythology. When Odysseus went to fight in the Trojan War, he put his trusted friend, Mentor, in charge of his son, Telemachus.
In 2018 I had an opportunity to mentor seven amazing women, four through a formal mentor program I design and launched for a professional security organization. Three of the women I met in passing at industry conferences who were interested in a career in Cyber Security and didn’t know where to start. They wanted to know how to study to pass security certifications, what books to buy, videos to watch, securing a job in the industry, as well as the soft skills needed.
After a great “feel good” year of helping others I wanted to extend my reach to help other girls and women in cyber security and potentially other STEM fields. I feel that it is my calling to grab someone by the hand and pull them up, and help them succeed on their journey. I’m passionate about what I do and I love my job. I want to encourage you to have the same confidence, energy, and I want you to feel the same way I do.
They call helping others “paying it forward”. What better way to contribute, but to give back by sharing your knowledge. That’s what we do here. That’s the reason why we WIN at WINS Mentors.
